Cleanings and Exams

Cleanings and Exams

The American Dental Association and your dentist recommend having your teeth cleaned professionally at least twice a year. Regular dental cleaning help remove debris and plaque from places your toothbrush can't reach, including underneath the gum line and between teeth. The dentist will also polish your teeth to create a smooth surface and remove any stains.

When is dental cleaning recommended?

Dental cleaning is recommended every six months for most individuals. Some patients may be recommended to visit the dentist every three to four months, depending on their oral health.

How is dental cleaning performed?

Dental cleaning involves the removal of tartar and plaque from the surfaces of the teeth. The teeth are then polished. Dental cleanings are performed both at the dentist's office and at home.

At the dentist's office, the dentist will begin by reviewing the health and condition of the teeth. Cleaning tools are used to remove tartar and plaque, and the teeth are then polished. Dental cleanings typically take between 30-60 minutes.

What can I expect during my exam?

Your visit will begin with our dentist reviewing your medical history. We will look at your teeth, gums, and mouth and closely examine for cavities, plaque, and any discoloration. Our dentist will gently scrape plaque from your teeth, floss them, and make you rinse your mouth with a fluoride solution.

Our dentist will take digital x-rays of your mouth. These images will help us with diagnostics, checking for areas of decay, crack, or other damage. We may also choose to take images inside your mouth with our intraoral camera.

What is an oral cancer screening?

During your dental exam, the dentist may perform an oral cancer screening. The dentist will look for abnormal tissue or changes in your mouth. This screening can help the dentist diagnose potential problems early, so you can seek treatment before the problem develops into something more serious.
