Dental veneers are custom made wafer-thin shells that are made of tooth-colored materials. They can be made from porcelain or from a resin composite material. You can discuss with your experienced cosmetic dentist what veneer material is the best choice for you. They are sometimes also referred to as dental porcelain laminates or porcelain veneers. Veneers are designed to improve the appearance of your teeth by covering the front surface of your teeth. The shells are then bonded to the front of your teeth to complete the desired changes of color, shape, size or length.
THERE ARE SEVERAL TYPES OF PROBLEMS THAT DENTAL VENEERS ARE ROUTINELY USED TO FIX:
If you are bothered by any of these issues or are seeking an alternative to braces or Invisalign, dental veneers may be a great option for you.
The procedure for getting dental veneers usually requires three trips to the dentist. Your first appointment will be a consultation and the next two will be to make and apply the veneers. Let’s take a closer look at the process below:
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PLANNING APPOINTMENT:
You will be actively involved at this appointment as you describe to your dentist what your wishes are and what you would like to achieve. Your dentist will examine your teeth to make sure that veneers are the right choice for you. You may have dental x-rays or impressions done at this visit as well.
Your dentist will now remove enamel from your tooth surface to prepare for the thickness of the veneer that will be added to your tooth surface. An impression will then be made and sent off to a lab which will construct your veneer.
Your dental veneer is ready to be permanently cemented to your tooth, but your dentist will examine the fit and the color and trim if necessary. Color can also be adjusted. Your teeth will be cleaned, polished and etched before applying the veneer, which will roughen the tooth to allow for a strong bonding. A special cement is applied and then placed on the tooth. A special light beam will be used to activate the chemical in the cement and harden or cure it quickly. Your dentist may have you return in a couple weeks to check the fit of your new veneers.
